Abu Surra is a Yemeni market name for local and African zebu calves with a prominent hump and loose skin folds beneath the neck and abdomen. Red calves are among the most sought-after for fattening and slaughter because of their local-style meat and heat tolerance.

Yemeni Tihami Cattle

Al Hodeidah, Hajjah, Wadi Mawr, Wadi Zabid and Wadi Rima'a

A Yemeni coastal zebu type, relatively larger than the mountain type, with longer bones, a small hump and short hair that supports heat dissipation. It performs well for fattening and meat production in hot Tihama conditions.

A small-to-medium Yemeni mountain zebu with a compact body and a high hump that is more prominent in bulls, together with short horns and small ears. It is efficiently adapted to highlands and difficult mountain conditions.

Aden Coastal Cattle

Aden, Lahj, the Tuban Delta and Abyan

A southern Yemeni coastal cattle type similar to Tihami cattle but slightly smaller, with a very small hump. It is adapted to high heat and humidity along the southern coast and shows good resistance to external parasites.
